Today, September 30, 2015, the TPP ministerial session took place in Atlanta, Georgia. According to The Japan News and TPP minister, Akira Amari, “the negotiations are making progress.” Are the negotiations, however, making significant progress? That has yet to be determined. Amari states that the ministerial meeting(s) intended to only be a two-day venture (Wednesday and Thursday) in Atlanta could potentially be extended through Friday.
An official involved in the negotiation is quoted stating, “Technical discussions made progress with regard to thorny issues including those in the field of intellectual property rights.” However, negotiations surrounding dairy and automobile tariff cuts, a topic that failed to reach an agreement at the July conference in Hawaii, have yet to come to a conclusion. Are TPP negotiations going to be prolonged?
