Obama signs bill giving himself fast-track powers for trade deal

Article Date: 06/29/2015

Recently Congress approved President Barack Obama’s “fast-track” bill (TPA – Trade Promotion Authority), therefore giving him powers to conduct and conclude trade legislation. In addition to this bill, President Obama signed Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) to assist U.S. workers that lose their jobs from free-trade.

Originally the two bills (TPA and TAA) went into the Senate and House of Representatives as a pair, however, there was a battle within President Obama’s own political party. Surprisingly, “Republicans backed the President.” With several battles for both bills, TPA and TAA were eventually voted on separately and passed by the Senate and House.

TPA gives President Obama the power he needs to conclude TPP negotiations quickly. Ultimately, TPA gives Congress “the right to accept or reject the final agreements, but not to make any changes to them.”
